Where Faith and Community Thrive

About Al-Islah Islamic Center

Welcome to Al-Islah Islamic Center, a place of worship, education, and community service located in the heart of Hamtramck, Michigan. Established in 2000 by dedicated members of the Bangladeshi-American community, Al-Islah has since evolved into a vibrant, inclusive masjid, open to all Muslims and serving a diverse congregation.

Our Space

Housed in a beautifully renovated two-story building, formerly a medical clinic, our center is designed to meet the spiritual and communal needs of our congregation. We offer separate prayer spaces for men and women, with the main prayer hall featuring a simple yet elegant row of arches, providing a peaceful atmosphere for reflection and prayer. The facility also includes a dedicated funeral (janazah) space, ensuring that our community has the necessary resources during life’s most important moments.

Educational Programs

At Al-Islah, we believe that education is key to nurturing faith and building a strong community. We are proud to offer a weekend Islamic school for children, where students are taught Arabic, Bangla, and the Qur’an. During the summer, we extend our offerings through a summer school program to further engage and support our youth. For adults, we host weekly tafsir (Qur’an study) sessions every Sunday, and monthly youth meetings that foster deeper understanding of our faith. Our women’s programs, including tafsir and special events, provide a welcoming space for personal growth and sisterhood.

Community Engagement

Though originally founded by Bangladeshi Muslims, Al-Islah embraces all Muslims and actively promotes a spirit of unity and inclusiveness. Our center has built strong relationships with local schools, other masjids, and churches, as well as interfaith organizations. We take pride in our efforts to engage in meaningful dialogue, promoting mutual respect and understanding across all faiths.

A Historical Legacy

Al-Islah made headlines in 2004 when it became one of the first masjid in the United States to broadcast the call to prayer (adhan) publicly, after a historic decision by the Hamtramck City Council. This moment marked a significant step in the city’s recognition of religious diversity and freedom, a legacy that we continue to uphold today.

History

The Al-Islah Islamic Center was founded in 2000 by Bangladeshi immigrants, most of whom are followers of Allama Abdul Latif Chowdhury (Fultholi). The first Bangladeshi masjid in Hamtramck, Al-Islah was originally located in a small storefront on Joseph Campau and moved to its current home, a renovated medical clinic, in 2001. The group hopes to establish a traditional madrasa (religious school) in an adjacent building they purchased in 2004. Al-Islah Islamic Center gained national media attention in 2004, when the congregation sought to broadcast their Adhan (call to prayer) from a loudspeaker outside the masjid. The Adhan has been broadcast publicly in Detroit since the 1970s, and in Dearborn since the 1980s, but many Hamtramck residents opposed this practice in their city. Al-Islah’s leadership found itself embroiled in an election year battle with the City Council. The matter was resolved in a special city-wide referendum, which Al-Islah and their supporters won handily.
